Radiation Begins, and a New Poll!

Radiation and Chemotherapy began today.  Radiation will last for the next 6-7 weeks, and Chemotherapy for at least the next 12 months.  I will lose my hair next week, which makes a new poll necessary - what sort of headgear should I adopt?  Vote for your favorite at the bottom of this post!  The choices for this important poll are shown below:

Plaid Trapper's Hat

Russian Orthodox Kamilavka

French Biretta

Spanish Biretta

"Papist" Trucker Hat

Rebel Flag Bandana

Cardinal's Galero (with tassels)

Black Cappello Romano

Philip, I think it depends on the event and your shoes. So many options. Praying with you in Mary.

Of course, should you come to Lourdes, you know that someone who dropped his sword for a hat, and has feathers, will be supplying you with a hat when you are least expecting!

I'll be praying for you during your treatments and I admire you so much for keeping up with your blog the way you do. I so enjoy all your pic's of your trip with the stories that go along. I hope today was as easy as it could be for you and I know you have many, many angels on your shoulders. God Bless You Philip, I love you,

I say, when in Rome (or North Carolina) ... wear a Rebel doo rag.

Keeping you in prayer, Philip.

Philip,

As a "person of scalp" I have for years employed a variety of "Hair Alternative Technologies", suitable for different occasions and climates. I heartily recommend a genuine Panama (made in Ecuador) be added to the list. But not before Memorial Day.

Want to wish you good luck with the treatment. Will pray for you!

About the headcovering...maybe it's an idea to switch between some, depending on the occasion..
Oh, and there's nothing wrong with wearing nothing on your head..in my opinion.

It's not out of embarrassment - I have to protect my head from the sun because the radiation damages the skin.

Looks like the Capello Romano and Papist Trucker Hat are the front runners so far!

Well, whatever you choose, just make sure it coordinates with this:

(And get one for Fr, too, I have a feeling he would use it a LOT. Can't get that cassock dirty, and summer grilling time is coming up fast!)

Philip,

A vote for the Cardinals Galero with tassels.
This will not only protect your head from the sun, but your sides as well.
[You can also hang chocodiles from the tassels as snacks for later on.]

God bless you as this ordeal unfurls for you.

In Jesu Christo et Maria.

I can just imagine Our Dear Blessed Lord is looking down on you with extreme pleasure. I think the large big one with the brim would make a wonderful statement.

I have voted for the hat which the elders in the Stella Artois commercial were wearing, so you would be in good company. However, it is noted the younger priest who was chosen to be the "runner" wore the wide brimmed hat, so you would be a kindred spirit with him also in that you are newly embarking on this change in channels (nautically speaking). As my sister once said, and this is something you must always keep in mind, it's not whether you win or lose, it's how you LOOK when you play the game! Let that always be your guide! hehe As an aside, Phil, my personal opinion is that you would look good in any and ALL of these hats.....just make sure whichever one you choose for the day matches what you are wearing or at the very least, shows off your wonderful blue eyes, so no one will notice the mismatch! Loads of love, Mrs. H.

Ah yes, forgot about the damage (should have known as a medical student). I'm sorry.
Oh, and didn't really mean to point to embarassment..I think *-)

Yes, maybe variety is a good idea :) God bless you mightily as you begin this journey. May His light fill your body to heal and to miraculously prevent side effects as much as possible.

Well, you're in North Carolina, but the Rebel flag doo rag does NOT convey a message you want to be sending (unless you can find one in African colors, i.e., green, black and yellow), so that leaves the "Papist" trucker/ball cap...

You remain in our prayers, especially at the altar.

Dear Philip,

I'll continue praying for you daily as you embark on this journey of recovery via this long and arduous road.

I also voted, and was originally going to go for the Papist trucker hat, but upon closer inspection of the picture, I doubt a mesh scalp tan is really the look you're going for. So I added my vote for the Roman Capello.

However, in light of your recent travels, my write-in vote would have been for scarves/dew rags of different cities and countries. Maybe if someone makes ones of saints? Or of other cancer survivors who've gone on to do great things as I have faith that you shall too.

When my wife was undergoing chemotherapy after a mastectomy, her regime consisted of a day in hospital on a drip every two weeks; in the intervening period, she took medication.

During her days in the hospital, the nurses fitted her with a sort of shower cap with ice in it which she wore while on the drip.

She didnt lose her hair at all - but of course there are many chemo drugs, and the ones she took may have been relatively mild.

That was 20 years ago. She's still going strong but like me getting creaky.

God bless.

For informal occasions I would choose the Papal hat as this would also gain you extra indulgences for defending the Pope who has so often lately been under attack. Perhaps you could consider a Swiss guard hat
for some occasions.

Philip: Don't wear any special hat, except to prevent exposure to the sun. Be like St. Paul who shaved his head in fulfillment of a penitential vow. Your hair will grow back.

My prayers for successful completion of your therapeutic endeavors accompany this note.

Good luck with your treatment! I think all of the options on the poll are most excellent. :)

As a newly ordained Caveman, you have no choice.

A dead, gutted small mammal. Coon, squirrel, sewer rat... doesn't matter.

I will offer my attendance at Mass this evening for you. God be with you at this difficult time.
